Chemical Engineering deals with the study of the operation and design of chemical plants as well as methods of improving production. Chemical engineers develop economical commercial processes to convert raw material into useful products. Chemical engineering uses principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and economics to efficiently use, produce, design, transport, and transform energy and materials.

A separate department of Applied Chemistry is established to teach Chemistry Courses to the students and do research in Chemistry. Right from the inception the faculty members in the Department have been guiding students for Ph. D. and so far more than 50 students have obtained their Ph. D. degrees and the faculty members have published more than 500 research papers. The Department shoulders the responsibility of teaching Chemistry courses to Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, and Postgraduate students of the Institute.

The faculty members are offering consultancy to Industry. The major research interests of the faculty are catalysis, organic synthesis, environmental chemistry, water purification, and bioenergy.
